He was empty. And yet, he was a respected member of the Jewish high council. In such a demanding role - teaching, meetings regarding observance of the Law, overseeing Temple services, supervising various rituals - who would have thought this teacher of teachers would want to arrange a meeting under the cover of darkness in order to speak with a carpenter from Nazareth? Puzzling. Somehow Nicodemus was willing to humble himself and, though perhaps at this point afraid to approach the carpenter publicly, bring his deep, burning questions to the One he knew could answer ... Jesus.
