Define Manhood…

Mens frat

Just a reminder that EDGE will meet this Tuesday at the Mt. View campus of Christ Church

7-9pm – we’ll be talking briefly about several up coming events and ministry focus.

…Please consider joining us as we’re going to be making some changes to make a difference!

Define Manhood…

I was challenged with this question a few years ago and without a second thought rambled off a list of ‘stuff’.   But as I reflected I soon discovered that it was all pretty shallow and had little to do with the character or essence of manhood.

The ‘stuff’ is material things and the outward appearance that society defines as a ‘man’.   Typically, it’s all the expensive toys and a tough-guy exterior that Hollywood and Madison Avenue advertising executives would want us to believe that is true Manhood.

But, once I took a second look at the definition of Manhood it suddenly became clear that ‘stuff’ had nothing to do with Manhood.   I felt as though I knew what authentic Manhood looked like but, I’d be hard pressed to define it.

If you’ve ever wondered about this and about your relationship as a man to Christ I’d ask you to consider the following:  Joining the biblically based Men’s study called “Men’s Fraternity”.   The local Hickory and the National links are below:

http://www.mensfraternity.com/

http://www.hickorymensfrat.com/

This study will be starting in mid September and will be from 6:00am – 7:30am…Yeah, that’s right, early morning – when most of us can make it.  At least those who want to step-up to the challenge…

Just click the links and learn more about “Men’s Fraternity” – then mark your calendar and set your alarm clock…

Please consider this, guys – it could really make a difference!

Save the Date – 1st EDGE meeting – Tuesday, Sept 7th

cause 6000

“It’s quiet. It’s early. My coffee is hot. The sky is still black. The world is still asleep. The day is coming. In a few moments the day will arrive. It will roar down the track with the rising of the sun. The stillness of the dawn will be exchanged for the noise of the day. The calm of solitude will be invaded by decisions to be made and deadlines to be met. For the next twelve hours I will be exposed to the day’s demands. It is now that I must make a choice. Because of Calvary, I’m free to choose. And so I choose……

I CHOOSE LOVE…No occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love. Today I will love God and what God loves.

I CHOOSE JOY…I will invite my God to be the God of circumstances. I will refuse the temptation to be cynical…the tool of the lazy thinker. I will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings created by God. I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity to see God.

I CHOOSE PEACE…I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live.

I CHOOSE PATIENCE…..I will overlook the inconveniences of the world. Instead of cursing the one who takes my place, I’ll invite him to do so. Rather than complain that the wait is too long, I will thank God for a moment to pray. Instead of clenching my fist at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage.

I CHOOSE KINDNESS…I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone. Kind to the rich, for they are afraid. And kind to the unkind, for such is how God has treated me.

I CHOOSE GOODNESS…I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one. I will be overlooked before I will boast. I will confess before I will accuse.

I CHOOSE FAITHFULNESS…Today I will keep my promises. My debtors will not regret their trust. My associates will not question my word. My wife will not question my love. And my children will never fear that their father will not come home.

I CHOOSE GENTLENESS…Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I make a demand, may it be only of myself.

I CHOOSE SELF-CONTROL…I am a spiritual being. After this body is dead, my spirit will soar. I refuse to let what will not, rule the eternal. I will be drunk only by joy. I will be impassioned only by my faith. I will be influenced only by God. I will be taught only by Christ.

LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS AND SELF CONTROL Gal.5:22,23

To these I commit my day. If I succeed, I will give thanks. If I fail, I will seek His grace. And then, when this day is done, I will place my head on my pillow and rest with the peace that passes all understanding.”

Next meeting September 7th 2010

EDGE Guys –

We’re only three weeks away from starting a brand new season of EDGE.  So just as a reminder here is what to expect:

As before, we’ll be playing some volleyball and just hanging out – please keep your unchurched buddy in mind and bring him out to play.  We’ll continue to be a non-threatening, “safe” environment for any unchurched guy who is a little skeptical of church people.

Also – we’ll be talking about partnering with a water well drilling ministry to focus our resources on.  Be thinking “overseas mission trip” with a bunch of hard working – mechanically minded guys.  This could be our signature challenge…

And finally – our guest speaker will be Earle Fincher from the “Men’s Fraternity” group.  He’ll be sharing what this study is all about and answering any questions you may have.

Oh yeah – one more thing:  bring 12 bucks to buy a tee-shirt from the Christ Church youth group.  They are raising money to sponsor a water well drilling project – it’s a cool shirt, so please support this mission.  They also will be on hand to answer questions about their ministry (and maybe we’ll challenge them to a volleyball game..)

So….mark your calendar now:

EDGE – Men’s Outreach

Here is the website if you wish to check out what is included in the

“All sport pass”, www.usnwc.org/

The Expanding EDGE…

With the summer months in full swing I’m not planning on meeting again until September.

When we start again we’re going to look at some renewed focus to expand our ministry.

Specifically, we’re going to be making a bigger impact as we move forward.  Please take a moment to explore these websites as we’ll be making plans to partner with each of these:

gari_whitewater1

We’ll be planning an outing to the National Whitewater Center in Charlotte sometime in early September.  Cost for this event will be around $50.00 http://www.usnwc.org/

Also we’re going to discuss partnering with an organization called “Living Water International”.   This ministry is a global organization that drills and maintains water wells in impoverished countries.  I’d like to discuss adopting this ministry and exploring the idea of planning an overseas mission in conjunction with Christ Church Ghana medical mission trips. http://www.water.cc/

Finally – I’d like all of you to consider joining me in the “Men’s Fraternity”.  This is a biblically based Men’s movement that dozens of churches around Hickory will participate in starting Wednesday, September 15th at 6:00am.  Please check this out – it has the potential to be HUGE! http://www.mensfraternity.com/

So…please mark your calendar for September 7th – our first meeting after the summer.  Bring your game, guys!!  (and yes, I’ll remind you as the date gets closer…)

See ya soon,

Leadership is…

quote3-big

Lately, we’ve been hearing a lot about leadership here at Christ Church and I thought I’d throw in my two cents:

Leadership is…

…being brave enough to make the right decision, even when it’s not popular.

…being the subject matter expert.

…not asking anyone to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself.

…being a good follower.

…being a good listener.

…catching someone doing something right.

…praising in public and admonishing in private.

…confronting with the facts.

…being on time.

…leaving late.

…picking the right battle – and then win.

…picking the wrong battle – and knowing when to concede.

…being humble in dealing with those in your charge.

…being  audacious in executing plans.

…being the loudest cheerleader.

…seeing everyone as an individual – and treating them as the most important part of the team.

…telling the truth.

…squashing lies.

…setting the standard.

…fully relying on God.

Of course, this is just “bumper-sticker philosophy” concerning leadership and is somewhat cliché.   But, they are all time tested and they all work.  If you’d like to be around some leaders who are making a difference please consider joining us on the EDGE:

When:  Tuesday, March 9th, 7-9pm

Where:  Christ Church Mountain View campus (directions:  http://www.christnc.com/mtv/  click on “get directions)

What:  EDGE men’s outreach.  This night will be a little different than what we’ve done in the past – Derek Cline will be sharing his mission adventure for about 15 minutes.

Who:  Any guy who wants to make a difference in his home, job and community.

How:  We’ll be in a competitive atmosphere – so wear your gym clothes!

Hope to see ya there,

J.D.
